About John

Forty years of listening to horses.

A horseman shaped by the grasslands of Paraguay and four decades of mornings in Queensland paddocks.

John Chatterton with horses

From Paraguay to Queensland

John grew up on a cattle ranch in Paraguay, South America — a world where the horse was often a family's most valuable possession. The Gauchos, the native horsemen of the region, had a way with horses that John never forgot. They didn't dominate. They didn't rush. They simply made themselves worth following.

After moving to Australia, John spent the next four decades studying, refining, and teaching what he'd seen and learned. He worked with hundreds of horses — young horses, problem horses, traumatised horses — and the same truth showed up every time: when a horse feels safe with you, everything else becomes easier.

Today, John is based in Boonah, QLD, and travels across Australia offering clinics, private lessons, and group sessions. He works with horse owners at every level — from first-time buyers to experienced competitors dealing with a specific problem.

The Science Behind It

Affiliative leadership — what it actually means.

Most traditional horse training is built around the concept of dominance — establishing yourself as the leader of the herd through pressure, movement, and control. John's approach is different, and the difference matters.

"Affiliative" comes from the idea of affiliation — seeking closeness, comfort, and connection. A lead mare in a natural herd doesn't dominate the others constantly. She's the calm centre. The others stay near her because near her feels safe. That's what John teaches you to become for your horse.

The practical result is a horse that seeks your company, accepts handling willingly, loads without drama, and remains calm under pressure — not because it's been controlled, but because it genuinely trusts you.

John & Janet

A shared life with horses.

John and his wife Janet have bred and raised many foals together over the years at their property in Boonah. That experience — watching foals from their very first hours — gave John an insight into how horses learn that you simply can't get from a textbook.

He observed that foals are hyper-sensitive from birth. The way you handle them in those first days — whether you rush, grab, or overwhelm — shapes how they respond to humans for the rest of their lives. This understanding is woven through everything John teaches.

The JR Easy Traveller

A float designed the way horses actually travel.

John didn't just train horses — he also designed and patented the JR Easy Traveller Horse Float, a float built around what horses actually need when they travel, not what's convenient to manufacture.

After years of seeing horses scramble, stress, and arrive at their destination exhausted, John worked out that most standard float designs were asking horses to do something physically difficult. The JR Easy Traveller addresses this with sloping walls and adjustable rump and chest bars that effectively act as a seat belt — giving the horse room to step sideways for balance without being thrown around on corners.

The design also ensures horses can lower their heads below the point of their withers, allowing proper respiratory drainage during the journey — a factor that's often overlooked but critically important for long-distance transport.
